Biography: Cantinflas was a Mexican comedian and actor, best known internationally for his role in Around the World in 80 Days (1956) in which he played Passepartout alongside David Niven. He earned a Golden Globe for Best Actor for this role.
He was an iconic comedian in Latin America and Spain, where his humour was distinctly local and gave rise to its own set of terminology: cantinflear, cantinflada, cantinflesco, cantinflero. Some called Cantinflas the Charlie Chaplin of Mexico, while Charlie Chaplin himself called him the best comedian alive.
Cantinflas was a major figure in the Golden Age of Mexican cinema, not only as a business leader but also in labor politics. He used his position to act as a spokesperson for all that had no voice, speaking on behalf of them against the Mexican government.
