Fox Television Studios is mining for Scandinavian gold, setting a scripted development deal with Netherlands-based Eyeworks Group to generate projects for U.S. and international markets.

Deal was unveiled Wednesday by Fox TV Studios prexy David Madden and Reinout Oerlemans, CEO and founder of Eyeworks, and Eyeworks’ Poa Stromberg.

Madden said the deal was driven in part by Fox TV Studios‘ experience in adapting the Danish drama “Forbrydelsen” into the AMC drama “The Killing.” It opened his eyes to the wealth of books, films and TV series that originate in the region.

“We didn’t want simply to wait for finished product to come to us – we wanted the opportunity to leap into the trenches with Scandinavian writers, and to develop stories from the ground up whose universal appeal would stem from their origins in the richness of Scandinavia’s unique sensibilities,” Madden said.

Los Angeles-based producer Melinda Jason, who also has a first-look deal with FTVS, helped play matchmaker between the companies. She’ll serve as exec producer on all projects resulting from the deal through her Conspiracy banner.

“While Eyeworks may be best known to American and international audiences for its breakout reality and factual entertainment unscripted series, the company has been emerging as a force in scripted drama, in both film and television, especially in Europe, and particularly in Spain, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and Scandinavia,” Oerlemans said. “This deal with Fox TV Studios gives Eyeworks in Scandinavia and its talented writers the opportunity to develop for worldwide audiences.”
